Will med school interviews be online 2023 2024? ›

Regional interviews are not available. Interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom during the 2024-2025 application season.

How Hard Is It to Get Into Med School. Medical schools are highly competitive, with an average acceptance rate of 43.7% for the 2023-2024 academic year, as reported by the AAMC.

Committee Decision – The CUSM MD admissions committee will review all application materials, including primary, secondary, and interview evaluations, to classify the candidate as Accepted, Waitlisted, or Rejected. Candidates will be notified of decisions via e-mail.

If your MCAT score and GPA are lower than the average accepted GPA and MCAT score for that medical school, this is likely a reason why you are not receiving any invites to interview. You should always check these statistics before applying.

Note: The AAMC continues to recommend virtual interviews for both medical schools and residency programs although we recognize that they may take different approaches for sound reasons. We will continue to monitor and update the recommendations as new information becomes available.

Data published by the AAMC shows that between the 2014–2015 and 2023–2024 academic years (i.e., the last 10 years), the total number of medical school applicants grew from 49,480 to 52,577, a 6.25 percent increase.

Fourth Year (MS4 or M4)

The first half of fourth year is arguably the hardest part of the entire medical training process, at least if you go into a competitive surgical subspecialty.

Many admissions officers view a GPA of 3.8 as very competitive, and they like to see at least a GPA of 3.5 or above. These scores will be especially competitive if your major is related to medicine, and it's even better if it's a difficult science major like neuroscience or physics.

The easiest medical school to get into in California is the Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, which has comparatively lower GPA and MCAT requirements.

Medical school interview invitations are typically sent out beginning in late summer or early fall but can continue through winter or even into the following spring.

Even though COVID-19 is no longer the threat it once was, other programs are still conducting their resident interviews virtually and may continue to do so for the foreseeable future. There are several reasons for this, but primary among them is equity.

Most medical schools typically send out interview invites between September and January. Unfortunately, if you haven't received an interview invite by the end of January, it may be a sign that you might not get one this cycle.
